Durmitor National Park is one of Montenegro's most spectacular natural treasures - a UNESCO World Heritage Site of dramatic mountain peaks, glacial lakes and Europe's deepest river canyon. Located in the north of Montenegro, Durmitor is surprisingly accessible as a full-day private tour from the Adriatic coast.
1. Where is Durmitor National Park?
Durmitor National Park is located in northwestern Montenegro, in the municipality of Žabljak. The park covers an area of 390 square kilometres and reaches altitudes of over 2,500 metres. The highland town of Žabljak, at 1,456 metres above sea level, serves as the main gateway to the park and is the highest town in the Balkans.
From Kotor and Budva on the Adriatic coast, Durmitor is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car, making it an ideal destination for a full-day private tour.
2. The Black Lake
The Black Lake (Crno Jezero) is the most iconic sight in Durmitor National Park and one of the most photographed landscapes in Montenegro. Surrounded by ancient black pine forests and overlooked by the imposing Meded peak, the Black Lake is a glacial lake of extraordinary beauty.
A gentle walking trail circles the lake and takes approximately one hour to complete. The reflections of the mountains and forest in the clear water create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly, particularly in the early morning when the light is soft and the lake is perfectly still.
3. Tara Canyon - Europe's Deepest Gorge
The Tara River Canyon is one of the natural wonders of Europe - at 1,300 metres deep, it is the deepest canyon in Europe and the second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon. The canyon stretches for 82 kilometres through the mountains of northern Montenegro and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The viewpoints above the Tara Canyon offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Balkans. The turquoise waters of the Tara River far below, surrounded by dense forest and sheer canyon walls, create a landscape of extraordinary drama and beauty.
4. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge
The Đurđevića Tara Bridge is one of the most impressive engineering achievements in the former Yugoslavia - a concrete arch bridge spanning the Tara Canyon at a height of 172 metres. Built between 1937 and 1940, the bridge offers dramatic views over the canyon and the Tara River below. For the adventurous, bungee jumping and zip-lining across the canyon are available from the bridge.
5. Best Time to Visit Durmitor
Summer (June–September) is ideal for hiking and sightseeing. The weather is warm and dry, and all roads are accessible. Autumn (September–October) brings spectacular foliage. Winter transforms Durmitor into a winter wonderland with excellent skiing above Žabljak. Spring sees dramatic waterfalls and lush green landscapes as the snow melts.
